You're not just selecting a service: you're inviting someone into your home and your daily life, and trusting them with the wellbeing of someone you love. It's completely understandable if that feels like a weighty thing to get right.

The reassuring news is that with the right questions and a clear sense of what to look for, the decision becomes far less daunting. This guide walks you through the things that really matter when comparing providers, so you can choose with confidence, and find care that feels like a genuine fit.

1. Start with the most important question: are they regulated?

This is the single most significant check, and it's worth understanding before anything else, because not all \"care providers\" are the same kind of organisation.

Fully managed, regulated providers take complete responsibility for your care. In England, that means being registered with and inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the official regulator. (In Scotland it's the Care Inspectorate, in Wales the Care Inspectorate Wales, and in Northern Ireland the RQIA.) A regulated provider employs and trains the carers, manages the care, carries out risk assessments, and is accountable for quality and safety.

Introductory agencies, by contrast, simply introduce you to a self-employed carer for a fee. They are generally not regulated by the CQC, and crucially, you become responsible for managing and employing the carer, including their pay, cover, and the quality of care. It can work for some families, but it places a great deal on your shoulders.

Neither option is \"wrong,\" but the difference is enormous, so make sure you know which type you're talking to. We explain it fully in our guide to CQC-regulated care versus introductory agencies.

2. A carer becomes part of the household, so personality, interests and rapport matter just as much as skills and experience.

Ask each provider how they go about matching. Good signs include:

A proper understanding of the person's needs, routines and preferences before suggesting anyone

Carers chosen for genuine compatibility, not just whoever is available

The chance to see a carer's profile, and ideally to speak with them before care begins, so day one isn't a meeting of strangers

A real say for you and your family in who is chosen

At Edyn, for example, we use smart matching to shortlist carers by experience, interests and location, share a digital profile for each, and arrange introductory calls before any care starts. Look for:

Thorough vetting, including enhanced DBS (background) checks

Proper training, both at the outset and ongoing, ideally including training relevant to specific conditions

Insurance and clear professional standards

Support for the carers themselves, because well-supported, valued carers provide better, more consistent care

A confident provider will answer all of this happily and clearly.

5. Ask about consistency and cover

Here's a question families don't always think to ask, but should: what happens when our carer needs a break or takes holiday?

A live-in carer can't be on duty around the clock, every day, indefinitely, nor should they be. The best providers plan for this properly, so you're never left with either a gap in care or a constant stream of unfamiliar faces.

A strong model is having a small, settled team around each client rather than a rotating cast of strangers. At Edyn, we allocate two carers, a primary and a respite carer, who work in tandem, so there's always cover and always a familiar face. Whoever you choose, ask exactly how they handle breaks, holidays and emergencies.

6. Look at the support around the carer

Great live-in care is never just one person working alone. Rather, it's a whole team making sure things run smoothly. When comparing providers, find out what sits behind the carer:

Is there a dedicated care manager or coordinator overseeing the care?

Can you reach someone easily if you have a question or concern, including out of hours?

Are there regular care plan reviews as needs change over time?

How will they keep you and your family informed and involved, especially if you live further away?

This wraparound support is often what separates good care from truly dependable care.

7. Make sure the cost is clear and transparent

Cost matters, but clarity of cost matters just as much. A trustworthy provider will explain their pricing openly, tell you exactly what's included, and flag any optional extras upfront, no vague figures, no surprises later.

When comparing quotes, check you're comparing like with like: what's covered, what isn't, and how it's structured. Specialist understanding can make a meaningful difference to both the quality of care and your peace of mind.

9. Trust how they make you feel

Finally, pay attention to something less tangible but no less important: how a provider treats you during these early conversations.

Do they listen properly? The way a provider handles your first enquiry often tells you a great deal about how they'll handle the care itself. You're not just selecting a service: you're inviting someone into your home and your daily life, and trusting them with the wellbeing of someone you love. It's completely understandable if that feels like a weighty thing to get right.\n\nThe reassuring news is that with the right questions and a clear sense of what to look for, the decision becomes far less daunting. This guide walks you through the things that really matter when comparing providers, so you can choose with confidence, and find care that feels like a genuine fit.\n\n\n1. Start with the most important question: are they regulated?\n\nThis is the single most significant check, and it's worth understanding before anything else, because not all \"care providers\" are the same kind of organisation.\n\nFully managed, regulated providers take complete responsibility for your care. In England, that means being registered with and inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the official regulator. (In Scotland it's the Care Inspectorate, in Wales the Care Inspectorate Wales, and in Northern Ireland the RQIA.) A regulated provider employs and trains the carers, manages the care, carries out risk assessments, and is accountable for quality and safety.\n\nIntroductory agencies, by contrast, simply introduce you to a self-employed carer for a fee. They are generally not regulated by the CQC, and crucially, you become responsible for managing and employing the carer, including their pay, cover, and the quality of care. It can work for some families, but it places a great deal on your shoulders.\n\nNeither option is \"wrong,\" but the difference is enormous, so make sure you know which type you're talking to. We explain it fully in our guide to CQC-regulated care versus introductory agencies.\n\n\n2. Look at their track record and reputation\n\nOnce you know a provider is regulated, you can look at how well they're regarded.\n\n * Their CQC rating. Regulated providers are rated Outstanding, Good, Requires improvement, or Inadequate. You can read a provider's inspection report for free on the CQC website: it's an honest, independent window into their quality. (Edyn, for what it's worth, is rated Good.)\n * Independent reviews. Platforms like Trustpilot and carehome.co.uk let you hear directly from other families. Look for patterns rather than one-off comments.\n * Awards and recognition. Industry awards can be a useful signal of a provider that's respected by its peers and looks after its people. (We were proud to be named Best Home Care Employer (London) at the 2025 Great British Care Awards, and how a provider treats its carers tends to show in the care they give.)\n * How established they are. Experience and stability matter when you're trusting someone with long-term care.\n\n\n3. Understand how they match carers to you\n\nIn live-in care, the match is everything. A carer becomes part of the household, so personality, interests and rapport matter just as much as skills and experience.\n\nAsk each provider how they go about matching. Good signs include:\n\n * A proper understanding of the person's needs, routines and preferences before suggesting anyone\n * Carers chosen for genuine compatibility, not just whoever is available\n * The chance to see a carer's profile, and ideally to speak with them before care begins, so day one isn't a meeting of strangers\n * A real say for you and your family in who is chosen\n\nAt Edyn, for example, we use smart matching to shortlist carers by experience, interests and location, share a digital profile for each, and arrange introductory calls before any care starts. You can read more in our guide to deciding on the right carer for you.\n\n\n4. Check how carers are trained and vetted\n\nYou're trusting this person with a great deal, so it's entirely reasonable to ask how a provider ensures their carers are up to it. Look for:\n\n * Thorough vetting, including enhanced DBS (background) checks\n * Proper training, both at the outset and ongoing, ideally including training relevant to specific conditions\n * Insurance and clear professional standards\n * Support for the carers themselves, because well-supported, valued carers provide better, more consistent care\n\nA confident provider will answer all of this happily and clearly.\n\n\n5. Ask about consistency and cover\n\nHere's a question families don't always think to ask, but should: what happens when our carer needs a break or takes holiday?\n\nA live-in carer can't be on duty around the clock, every day, indefinitely, nor should they be. The best providers plan for this properly, so you're never left with either a gap in care or a constant stream of unfamiliar faces.\n\nA strong model is having a small, settled team around each client rather than a rotating cast of strangers. At Edyn, we allocate two carers, a primary and a respite carer, who work in tandem, so there's always cover and always a familiar face. Whoever you choose, ask exactly how they handle breaks, holidays and emergencies.\n\n\n6. Look at the support around the carer\n\nGreat live-in care is never just one person working alone. Rather, it's a whole team making sure things run smoothly. When comparing providers, find out what sits behind the carer:\n\n * Is there a dedicated care manager or coordinator overseeing the care?\n * Can you reach someone easily if you have a question or concern, including out of hours?\n * Are there regular care plan reviews as needs change over time?\n * How will they keep you and your family informed and involved, especially if you live further away?\n\nThis wraparound support is often what separates good care from truly dependable care.\n\n\n7. Make sure the cost is clear and transparent\n\nCost matters, but clarity of cost matters just as much. A trustworthy provider will explain their pricing openly, tell you exactly what's included, and flag any optional extras upfront, no vague figures, no surprises later.\n\nWhen comparing quotes, check you're comparing like with like: what's covered, what isn't, and how it's structured. Our guide to the cost of live-in care explains what to expect and what shapes the price.\n\n\n8. Consider experience with specific conditions\n\nIf your loved one has a particular condition, such as dementia, Parkinson's, the after-effects of a stroke, cancer, or multiple sclerosis, ask whether the provider has real experience and training in that area. Specialist understanding can make a meaningful difference to both the quality of care and your peace of mind.\n\n\n9. Trust how they make you feel\n\nFinally, pay attention to something less tangible but no less important: how a provider treats you during these early conversations.\n\nDo they listen properly? Do they treat your loved one as an individual rather than a set of needs? Do they explain things patiently, without pressure or jargon? The way a provider handles your first enquiry often tells you a great deal about how they'll handle the care itself. A good one will make you feel heard, supported and unhurried.\n\n\nA handy checklist of questions to ask\n\nWhen you speak to a provider, these questions will quickly reveal a lot:\n\n * Are you regulated by the CQC (or the relevant national regulator), and what's your latest rating?\n * Are you a fully managed provider, or an introductory agency?\n * How do you match carers to clients, and can we speak to ours beforehand?\n * How are your carers vetted, trained and supported?\n * What happens when our carer takes a break or holiday?\n * Who manages the care day to day, and how do we reach you if we need to — including out of hours?\n * How often is the care plan reviewed?\n * Can you explain your pricing clearly, including anything that costs extra?\n * Do you have experience with our loved one's specific condition?\n\n\nWe're here to help you decide\n\nChoosing a live-in care provider is a big decision, but it's one you can absolutely feel confident about with the right information, and you don't have to weigh it all up alone.\n\nAt Edyn, our Family Care Advisors are always happy to talk things through, answer every one of the questions above, and help you understand what good care should look like, whether or not you ultimately choose us. What happens if my parent gets worse? Will the care keep pace with their needs, or will we suddenly have to uproot them to a care home just as they are at their most vulnerable?
