A well-organised, safely stored supply of medicines makes daily life calmer, reduces the risk of mistakes, and helps whoever is supporting your loved one, whether family or a carer, to help them safely.
Setting up a simple home pharmacy is not complicated. Here is how to store and organise medication sensibly at home, along with a few important notes on doing it safely.
Medicines keep best, and stay safe, when they are stored in the right conditions. As a general rule:
It helps enormously to have a single, dedicated place for medication, rather than tablets scattered across different rooms.
Choose one sensible spot, a particular cupboard or drawer, that is cool, dry and out of the way. Keeping everything together makes it easy to see what there is, to spot when something is running low, and for a carer or family member to find what they need. If there are children or vulnerable adults who visit, make sure this place is secure and out of reach.
One of the single most useful things you can have is a current, written list of all your loved one's medications: the name of each, the dose, and when it is taken.
This is invaluable for appointments, hospital visits, emergencies, and for anyone helping with care. Your pharmacy or GP can print a current list, often called a repeat prescription slip or medication summary, which is the most reliable version to work from. Keep it with the medicines, and update it whenever anything changes.
Running out of an essential medicine is stressful and can be risky, so a smooth repeat prescription routine is worth setting up:
If keeping track of multiple medicines and timings is difficult, a blister pack (also called a dosette or monitored dosage system) can help. This is a sealed pack, organised by day and time, that makes it easy to see what should be taken and when, and whether it has been taken.
Importantly, these should be prepared by your pharmacy, not filled at home. Ask your pharmacist whether a blister pack would suit your loved one, as they can dispense the medicines this way safely and correctly. Transferring medicines into pill organisers yourself is best avoided, as it can introduce errors and some medicines are not suitable for it. Leaving this to the pharmacy keeps it safe and accurate.
Old, unused or expired medicines should not simply be thrown in the bin or flushed away. Instead:
A regular clear-out also keeps the home pharmacy tidy and reduces the risk of confusion.
Medicines should be kept safely, particularly if anyone visiting the home might be at risk, including children or anyone who could take medication they should not. Certain medicines in particular need to be stored securely. If your loved one has medication that requires extra care, your pharmacist can advise on storing it safely.
Once care is underway, a live-in carer helps with medication as part of daily support, following clear guidance and proper training. That includes helping your loved one take the right medication at the right time, keeping accurate records of what has been taken, keeping an eye on stock and helping with reordering, and storing everything safely and correctly.
