A private bedroom of their own

The main thing a live-in carer needs is their own private bedroom. It does not need to be large or fancy, simply a comfortable, private room to call their own while they are staying with you, with space for their clothes and belongings, somewhere safe to store any medication, and reasonable privacy.

It is worth remembering that this is the carer's home too, for the weeks they are with you. A carer who has a comfortable, private space to retreat to and rest properly is a carer who can bring their very best to looking after your loved one, day after day.

Support to take their breaks

A live-in carer is entitled to a daily break, usually around two hours (roughly 14 hours a week), and to leave the home during that time to rest and recharge. Understanding and supporting this makes a real difference, and it is genuinely in your loved one's interest, because a rested carer is a more attentive, patient and energetic one.

If your loved one cannot safely be left alone during that break, please do not worry. That is our responsibility, not yours. We will arrange suitable cover so there is never a gap in support, and so the carer still gets the rest they need. A good night's rest

On a standard live-in arrangement, the carer sleeps at night while remaining on hand to help if your loved one wakes or needs support. This works beautifully for people whose night-time needs are occasional.

If your loved one tends to need more frequent or more involved help through the night, that is absolutely something we can provide, but it may call for a different arrangement, such as additional overnight support, so that no one is left exhausted. Naturally, the carer will need safe access to a bathroom and washing facilities. Where these are shared with the household, a respectful, comfortable arrangement is all that is needed. If anything about this changes while care is ongoing, just let us know.

So a working internet or WiFi connection in the home is really helpful. If it is ever an issue, let us know and we will help find a solution.

Your carer will treat your loved one, your home and your family with kindness and respect, and all that is asked in return is the same: respect for their private space and their well-earned breaks.
