Not everyone comes to live-in care looking for a long-term arrangement. Sometimes what you need is support for a few weeks: while a family carer takes a break, perhaps, or while a loved one gets back on their feet after a spell in hospital. So it's a very sensible question to ask: is there a minimum amount of time you have to book?

Why is there a minimum?

You might wonder why live-in care has a minimum period at all, when hourly care can be booked for as little as an hour. It comes down to what makes live-in care special in the first place, and to setting it up properly. There are a few good reasons.

It takes a little time to settle in. The real magic of live-in care lies in the relationship between a carer and the person they look after: the trust, the rapport, the comfortable routines that grow between them. That simply can't happen in a day or two. Two weeks gives your loved one and their carer the time to get to know one another, find their rhythm, and let the care genuinely bed in. Anything shorter wouldn't do it justice.

Good care needs to be set up properly. Before a placement begins, we carry out a thorough assessment, build a personalised care plan, complete a home risk assessment, and carefully match the right carer, who then travels to come and live in the home. Doing all of that well, safely and thoughtfully, takes real care. A sensible minimum period makes sure the arrangement can be set up properly rather than rushed.

Consistency matters. Live-in care is meant to offer calm, stable, familiar support. Very short placements would mean a revolving door of different faces: exactly the opposite of the settled, consistent experience that makes live-in care so valuable.

So the two-week minimum isn't a hurdle to clear. It's there to make sure that when you do choose live-in care, your loved one genuinely feels the benefit of it.
