Multiple Sclerosis (MS) care at home

Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis can happen when you’re relatively young.

It can be hard to watch a loved one experience the effects of a MS and the thought of moving into an elderly home or specialist setting is hugely upsetting. It’s crucial to find ways to manage looking after both yourself and your loved one.

At Edyn we know first hand the power of receiving the right care at home can have a positive impact on a person’s quality of life. Thanks to ongoing research, live-in care techniques and assistive technology, it is possible to live well with MS, and remain at home. We understand that everyone’s journey is different and the symptoms of MS vary between individuals and the day-to-day expression of the condition can likewise differ considerably.

What is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that can affect the brain and spinal cord.

Once diagnosed, MS stays with you for life, but treatments and specialists can help you to manage the condition and its symptoms.

In MS, the coating that protects your nerves (myelin) is damaged. This causes a wide range of potential symptoms, including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation or balance. It’s a lifelong condition that can sometimes cause serious disability, although it can occasionally be mild. In the UK people are most likely to find out they have MS in their thirties, forties and fifties. But the first signs of MS often start years earlier. Many people notice their first symptoms years before they get their diagnosis.

There are three main types of MS:

Symptoms

The central nervous system links everything your body does, so multiple sclerosis can cause many different types of symptoms.

The specific symptoms that appear depend on which part of your central nervous system has been affected, and the job of the damaged nerve.

Eyes and sight:

Partial or complete loss of vision, usually in one eye at a time, often with pain during eye movement.

Balance, walking and dizziness:

You might be wobbly on your feet from time to time, or you might need to move with more care than before to avoid losing balance.

Memory and thinking:

Cognitive problems can affect people with MS, but most people will be affected mildly.

Mental health:

It’s not unusual to experience depression, stress and anxiety when you have MS. Medication, talking therapies and self-help techniques can all make it easier to cope.

Unexplained pain or ache:

Pain is one way our bodies tell us that something is wrong. As we get older, it’s more common to experience aches and pains. But unexplained pain could be a sign of something more serious.
